Canyon Guard is a nonprofit organization, made up of citizens and organizations that try to advocate for Little Cottonwood Canyon’s environment.  They use data and experts to identify solutions to the traffic congestion and limit the impact to the environment at a reasonable cost.  My task was to help raise awareness about a proposal the Utah government had recently passed. It was a proposal about a gondola being built in Little Cottonwood Canyon using taxpayers’ money, so the ski resorts didn’t have to pay for the gondola.

I proposed the idea to Canyon Guard to use a social media campaign to reach the Salt Lake community with a message about the gondola being built. The message was to help people understand where their tax dollars were going, why the gondola was bad for the environment, and the watersheds they would go through to create the gondola.  It directed the concerned public to the Canyon Guard website for more in depth information.

Using various social media platforms, I was able to help Canyon Guard get their message out, and let the general population know about the situation. Through this social media campaign they are working to keep the government accountable, find more cost effective solutions, promoting environmentally sound alternatives and driving traffic to their website to take action and donate to this and other causes for the Little Cottonwood Canyon.
